Martinez
The martini was born in 1862 (at least, that’s one story). Called a martinez, this is the recipe from “Prof” Jerry Thomas’ 1887 bartender’s guide. Bear in mind, the vermouth and bitters would not have been the same as today.

Ingredients
- 4 parts sweet vermouth
- 1 part Old Tom gin
- Bitters
- Gum syrup
- Maraschino liquor
- Lemon
Instructions
Combine all ingredients (save the lemon) in a mixing glass. Add ice. Shake thoroughly and strain into a coupe glass. Place the lemon in the glass, and serve.
